Yesterday’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine had a worrisome study published– one which confirms what I see in my office every day. Even prior to the recent economic recession, 24% of children with private health insurance couldn’t get necessary healthcare for financial reasons. This is compared to 14% of children with similar problems who have public insurance.

Children who were underinsured often didn’t get medical care, or had delays in getting care– more than three times as often as kids with adequate insurance.

An improved, expanded version of Medicare for all, fully funded and with fair payment to physicians, is the answer. We can’t afford what we’re doing now, but we can afford a single payer system, publicly funded and privately delivered.

Contact your legislators today! And let me know if you are willing to do more.
